Thomas Goddard worked as a whipper-in to the Pytchley hounds but also rode in steeple chases. The Newport Pagnel Steeple Chase of Friday 19 Nov 1841 was reported in the Yorkshire Gazette (27 Nov 1841). Thomas rode ‘Luck’s All’ owned by Mr R Ekins, a gentleman farmer from Brixworth, over 4 miles and won the race by about a length. The report said that “…Most of the horses were much distressed , and never did jockeys come to the post in a more drenched, bespattered and woe-begone condition.” Luck’s All was 10 to 1 against so hopefully Thomas had a little flutter!
