Joseph Critchley (1839-1924) was the fifth son of William (Butcher Bill) Critchley. He was born in Sutton, St Helens but by 1871 the census showed he was working as a Saddler in Liverpool. He married Sarah Stoner on 10 Mar 1872 at St Philips Church, Liverpool.

In the 1881 census his occupation was shown as a Saddler & Surgical Appliance Maker and he was living at 88 Up Pitt Street, Liverpool. By 1901 Joseph had gone up in the world and was living in Blakeley House, Raby Drive, Raby, Wirral and was concentrating on making surgical appliances as were his sons Frederick and William. The Telephone Directory for Liverpool included Joseph Critchley & Sons (Tel. No. Royal 2648) whose surgical appliance manufacturing office and workshop were at 18 Great George Street, Liverpool.
By 1939 the phone directory held an advert for FH Critchley Ltd, Orthopaedic Mechanicians and Artificial Limb Manufacturers 21-22 Great George Square, Nelson Street, Liverpool 1.
